Update from Donna's current hostess.....

UPDATE: It's Sunday morning and we're about to head out for breakfast. I just wanted to say that having Donna here has been an absolute delight - she's pleasant, easy to get along with, and has a great sense of humor. (She also washes dishes!) She has been able to meet several of our friends and she fits in well with all types of people. Saturday was a fun day - we hit all the big tourist sights in Monticello - Monticello Milling, Dr. Davis' vet office, Winn Dixie, Jefferson Builder's Mart - you now those places that only the natives know about. Donna supervised my western pleasure lesson yesterday, assisted a gentleman with saddling and bridling one of my mares he is considering leasing, and even rode (with much success) one of my WP mares in training - the prettiest little jog you've ever seen. The lady who shows this mare said, "Now, why can't I get her to do that?!" Anyway, she's welcome here as long as she'd like to stay and I hope she'll stay for several days. It's been a pleasure having her around!

  7. Hi. This is Danan in Alabama. How do I get on board to help? Also, you might want to post a Chip In board so that people can donate money online. Here is the link for that. It's really easy to do.

  11. I hear Donna has made it to Marianna, FL

  12. Just to let you all know, Donna arrived in Marianna on Friday the 13th. I picked her and the horses up from Quincy.
Today, Monday the 16th, she was interviewed by our local newspaper the Jackson County Floridian and it should post Tuesday the 17th.
She is planning to head out tomorrow and will be traveling north on US 231 and is planning to camp out at the FL/AL rest stop and then continue on through Dothan via the Ross Clark Circle to 84 west.
She could sure use some feed for the horses once she is out on 84 west. She sure won't be hard to find.
She is feeding a 14% sweet feed with high fat, right now it is the omelene 200.
Grazing is good, but hay is always appreciated.
I will drop hay and feed at the state line tomorrow evening.

  13. She made it to Dothan this afternoon. And if she is only going around 20 miles a day, then our little town will be the next stop. I am going to keep an eye out for her. I have hay, feed, and a place for the horses to rest for the night.

  14. Donna called last night at 9:oo. She is in Dothan at the Flying J truck stop at the Loop. She slept in the woods last night and will be heading West on 84 this morning. Anonymous, if you can locate her, that would be wonderful! I told her that I'd call her this morning to let her know if anybody in Dothan could put her up for a day or two. Please call me at 813-719-0072... I'll put you in direct touch with her.

  15. Well, the good news is... Dixie Horse & Mule Co. in Wicksburg, Alabama has stepped up to the plate and offered Donna and the horses a place to rest overnight. Wicksburg is approx. 12 miles from where Donna is now. According to Lori at Dixie Horse & Mule Co., they have stalls for the horses and a living quarters trailer that is hooked up for Donna to sleep in.

Many thanks to Don Smith, owner of DH&M as well as his daughter Lori and "G". Thank you all so much for giving Donna a safe place to rest!

  21. My husband and I met up with Donna tonight and she is planning on coming and staying with us tomorrow. She said that Jay reared with her today, and she is kind of down in her back. But she is anxious to ride. I don't know if she is going to stay for a few days and rest, but we offered the invitation. I will definately post with updates. OH, she is in need of shoes for the horses. I personally don't know of anyone I trust to shoe, I keep all my horses bare. If anyone knows of someone in this area let us know. Thank you.

  22. Melissa,

I contacted a farrier yesterday who said he'd contact Donna last night. I guess that never happened. :/

I just did a search and emailed four more farriers in South Alabama. Hopefully one of them will call me today.

    I'll keep you posted.

You and your hubby are TOPS in my book!!!!

    Tonya

  23. Tonya,
Do you still have my number from where I called you yesterday? If not I will give it to you again. If the farriers can't get a hold of her, they are more than welcome to contact me as well. She said that the Dothan news crew is suppose to meet up with her today, so hopefully she will mention that she is needing new shoes. When their office opens I am going to call them and inform them of it as well. We offered to trailer to our house today, but she said that she is wanting to ride.

  24. Melissa,

I have a lead on a farrier in your area. I'm waiting for him to call me. If and when he does, I'll give him YOUR number so he can get directions to your house, etc.

I emailed the Dothan News the other night, hoping they would bring light to Donna's story. I was disappointed because they never emailed me back but maybe they're doing the story after all. I hope so. I'd like to see the chain of generosity continue until Donna reaches her destination and the only way to accomplish this is to make the public aware of it.

BTW: If you would rather email me, DragginH@aol.com

  26. WE GOT A FARRIER!!!! He will be here at 8 in the morning, and although he did not donate his time, there was someone who stepped up and took care of the cost.
She is planning on letting HERSELF and the horses rest for another day and leave out again on Sunday.

  28. Jayne,

Donna is in Alabama as of now. She is staying with a generous family for a couple of days. Your offer is very generous! Nice of you to offer!

  29. Tonya,
Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday. The farrier showed up right on time! And Donna said she really liked him. He told her that if she has any problems with the shoes within 100 miles from here that he would meet up with her and help her out.

She headed out of here around 9am. She is expecting to bed down in the small city of OPP, AL tonight. I will meet up with her again tonight to bring the horses more feed. That is a small community, with a lot of country folks, so hopefully someone will have offer more help for futher down the road.

Jayne- Donna is strickly staying on hwy 84 west. If you are near 84 or know someone who is, let us know. Thank you.

  30. It might be helpful if someone posted updates on the main page, as some won't think to read the comments list after having already visited once.

Glad Donna is on her way, and hope all has gone well since the last update.
